The Phone

    The Phone

I get good news, bad news, but mostly a lot of gossip. The phone changed my life on a snowy day that I will never forget.

It was a storm day and I was given the responsibility of looking after my brother. We were enjoying a meal of craft dinner when suddenly the red object on the counter made a loud ring.I scurried to the red, awkward shaped, pyramid like object that was shuffling across the counter. I pulled the “u” shaped receiver off the base and gently pressed it against my ear.  I was being gentle with the phone because my grandparents had passed it down to my parents.

A man on the other end of the phone said ”I am sorry there has been an accident, your parents have passed away”. My body froze. The phone  slipped out of my had and banged up against the cupboard leaving an indent of the phone. My brother jumped out of the chair in fear. Trying to stay strong I looked at him and said “everything is gonna be alright”.

After the accident me and my brother moved in with my grandparents. Not having my parents around made my day to day life difficult to live. To this day when that red phone rings, I think back to that  stormy  afternoon when my life changed forever.

  1. Austin,

This scene is one of those moments where, as the writer, you want to grab the reader's attention to those few minutes from when the speaker answers the phone to when he hangs it up. It becomes almost slow motion as every word spoken about his parents death creates a terrible impact. You have started that process, but it requires further work. Good effort overall as this is a tough topic to describe and write about.
